Deliverable Information Table

Executive Summary

The information which is currently available on cruise ships to the passenger regarding passenger evacuation in case of emergency is only offered on the Safety Leaflets available inside the cabins and on corridor walls. This information is both static and can be difficult to understand by passengers, especially under stressful conditions, low visibility, different languages or lack of user friendliness. Additionally, the ship’s status during emergency evacuation situations is constantly changing with time and the present means do not account for such dynamic changes.

In this direction, the purpose of the Personalised Evacuation Route Module is to design and develop components which can address all the above-mentioned issues and offer passengers different powerful tools to assist them during the ship evacuation process. These components are fully personalized for each passenger, easy to use and dynamic in terms of assessment of the passengers’ real-time status and position.

The components which have been decided to be implemented and provided to the passengers for increased situation awareness and safety are the following:

  • Passenger Mobile Application: mobile app to be installed on passenger mobile devices and provide dynamic and personalised navigation to the identified exits for each passenger based on his/her real-time location.

  • Audio and vibration-based navigation based on the Smart Lifejacket:

    • Passenger Chatbot Application: component providing dynamic audio instructions to the passenger regarding the optical evacuation route via an embedded earplug.

    • Haptic Navigation Module: vibration sensors guiding the passenger via haptic feedback on the personal lifejacket in order to guide him/her to the correct path and safe exit.

  • Biometric Monitoring Module: wearable wristband measuring and tracking the passenger’s biometric information and vital signals in order to calculate his/her stress level and provide the readings to the SafePASS system to account for passenger’s stress indication.

They are connected and supported by the SafePASS Core Engine’s Location-based Dynamic Evacuation Route (LDER) and the Crowd Dynamics models it calculates, which also take into account all the available routes in the ship based on their situation.

All the implemented components for the Personalised Evacuation Route Module aim to provide personalised information to passengers and assist them to safely navigate along the cruise ship to the designated paths and exits with the support of the central SafePASS system.
